A unique canvas of Amber Trinity has been created by weaving the voices of the State Choir Latvija  and poetic threads of the Poetry Days 2014. Poets from the countries of the historical Amber Road, their Latvian colleagues, translators and 12 Latvian composers have met to conjure up the mysterious worlds seen by the ancient Stone of the Sun - amber.

Nature has endowed amber with many beautiful features - the shining of light, delicate iridescence, hazy glitter and tangy smell of the sea. The ancient Greeks and Romands knew about the peculiar, honey coloured legendary Northern stone, and mentioned it along with gold and silver. Their envoys travelled far to the shores of the Baltic Sea in search of the much praised stone. The Baltic amber reached the Roman Empire via the shortest trans-European trade route - through the Moravian Gate the Amber Road led to Carnuntum (near Vienna), then over the Semmering and to the Adriatic Sea. It was the Amber Road that brought the Baltic peoples into the historical record for the very first time.

The Latvian nation is a small one, but Latvians are living by the seashore open to the wide world: this is why we call Latvian Amberland and the shore of the Baltic Sea - the Amber Shore. There are waves sighing in our veins, and there are our national heritage and the endless horizon of the sea reflecting in small pieces of amber washed ashore. Let this Amber Road  be a reflection of not just the historical trade route, but also a symbolic road where the compass - amber - shows the way to an international dialogue of composers and poets on the deep-sea jewel, making the words and sounds just opalescent and multi-coloured as amber itself!

State Choir Latvija has released a new CD with choral music by Ēriks Ešenvalds "At the foot of the sky". There are included such works as "Northern lights", "Seneca's Zodiac", "Vineta",""Stars", "Long Road" etc. Uniting thema of these works - stars, constellations, optical phenomena of athmosphere - northern lights, sun dogs.

Gabriel Jackson, composer:

Throughout his career Ēriks Ešenvalds has shown an engaging pragmatism and practicality; the requirements and abilities of the forces he writes for are always meticulously attended to, whether in a simple piece for a college choir, or a work for a virtuoso professional group like the State Choir Latvija, of which he was a tenor member for many years. This experience of the choral medium from the inside must, surely, account for the assurance and understanding that all his choral music demonstrates, but he also has a unique coloristic vision, and a flair for using unconventional techniques (both vocal and instrumental) to create a discrete and compelling response to each text he sets, themselves chosen with special care.

With this release Ondine presents two dramatic works by Dmitri Shostakovich, The Execution of Stepan Razin and the Zoya Suite, coupled with his Suite on Finnish Themes.
The Execution of Stepan Razin, premiered in Moscow in 1964, got a mixed reception. The execution scene and the final, tragic vision is simply spine-chilling: Stepan Razin's bloody head rolls to the ground and bursts out laughing at the Tsar. Capturing rich intonations and melodies of the text, the bass soloist and the chorus engage in a multi-layered dialogue of this very theatrical work.
The Zoya Suite is an orchestral suite from the music for the film Zoya (1944) a product of the war years, that tells of the cruel fate of 18-year-old partisan Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya fighting against the Germans. Shostakovich can well and truly be regarded as the father of Russian film music and also here, it's not only musical illustration, but he endowed the film with the drama of a classical symphony.
First performed in 2001, the Suite on Finnish Themes is a rather unknown work as being only discovered nearly four decades after Shostakovich died. The suite includes several arrangements of Finnish folk songs featuring a soprano and a tenor soloist.

The Latvian choral tradition is admired worldwide, and the nation’s composers for these forces are writing overwhelmingly spiritual music—perhaps a reaction to the suppression of that material by the Soviets. But here the State Choir Latvija do the honour of turning to a British composer—albeit one who has immersed himself in the contemporary Baltic sound-world. Gabriel Jackson’s sumptuous choral textures and beautiful, yet individual, harmonic language respond thrillingly to the Latvian treatment.
